Frequently Asked Questions

What is your attendance and cancellation policy?

A 24-hour notice for all cancellations is required.

What does neurodiversity-affirming mean?

Neurodiversity refers to the idea that each person’s brain develops differently, which has an impact on the way they think, feel, and understand the world around them. Neurodiversity-affirming therapy acknowledges that these differences result in both unique strengths and challenges for that individual and that support should be based on the needs of the individual rather than being based on what is considered to be “the norm.”

How are you different than "traditional" speech therapy?

A “traditional” approach to speech therapy is often highly structured, aiming to improve communication by teaching very specific language features in structured exercises and drills. I use a “functional” approach, using real-time communication and social interaction to enhance each client’s ability to effectively use language in their everyday situations. In my therapy sessions, conversation, connection, and reflection are the vehicle for change. Rather than having clients master individual language components, I prioritize functional communication and addressing the needs of the client to accomplish their communication goals, making therapy more contextually relevant and functional for them. The ultimate goal is always better communication that works for the client in their everyday communicative environments.

Do you work with adults?

Yes! Social communication is a crucial part of our personal and professional lives. I work with adult clients to identify objectives that meet their needs and achieve personal goals. This may include determining and understanding one’s own communication style, identifying supports and accommodations that improve one’s own communication, defining various relationships in one’s life, identifying and setting boundaries, working with the client and those around them to understand more about diversity in social communication style.

Is parent coaching a one-time service or ongoing?

While generally ongoing, the frequency of parent coaching will look different for each family depending on their individual goals.

Why don't you take insurance?

As a private pay clinic, I am able to provide a higher level of service - giving clients the therapy and support that they need without having to compromise based on insurance limitations. Insurance companies often dictate the number and duration of services and occasionally do not cover speech services at all.
